How do I know if my child needs speech-language therapy?
Children may benefit from speech-language therapy for many reasons. Some have difficulty producing speech sounds clearly, understanding language, expressing their thoughts, following directions, telling stories, or communicating socially. Others need support with stuttering, reading comprehension, written language, executive functioning, or feeding. You don't need to know exactly what is happening or have a diagnosis before reaching out. We're happy to discuss your concerns and help you decide whether an evaluation, screening, or other support might be appropriate.
What ages do you work with?
We work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, teenagers, and young adults. Our approach, materials, activities, and goals are tailored to each client's developmental level, interests, and individual needs.Does my child need a medical diagnosis to receive services?
No! Many children who benefit from speech-language therapy do not have a broader medical or developmental diagnosis. We work with children with a wide range of communication and learning profiles, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, developmental delays, childhood apraxia of speech, and other developmental or acquired conditions. We also support children with more isolated speech, language, or learning challenges.
Do you offer free consultations?
Yes! Initial phone consultations are always free.We can discuss your child's strengths and challenges, explain our services, answer questions, and help determine appropriate next steps.

Do you offer free speech-language screenings?
Yes! We offer two types of free screenings:Speech-language screenings for ages 3–6: Brief checks of articulation, fluency, receptive language, expressive language, and voice.
Articulation screenings for ages 2–18: Brief checks of speech-sound production.
Screenings typically take 15–30 minutes and include a one-page report with findings and recommendations.
A screening is not a comprehensive evaluation, but it can help determine whether further assessment may be useful.
What is the difference between a screening and an evaluation?
A screening is a brief check designed to identify possible areas of concern.A comprehensive evaluation takes a deeper look at a child's communication abilities, strengths, and needs. Depending on the concerns, it may include standardized testing, observation, language sampling, parent interviews, and other assessment methods.
Evaluation findings help guide individualized recommendations and treatment goals.
What happens after I contact Stewart SLP?
We'll begin by discussing your concerns and learning about your child's needs. Together, we'll determine whether a screening, evaluation, consultation, or therapy services would be the best next step. We'll also discuss scheduling, service options, and costs so you can make an informed decision.

What does neurodiversity-affirming therapy mean?
We recognize that children have different ways of thinking, learning, communicating, and experiencing the world. Our goal is not to change who a child is or force them to communicate in ways that feel unnatural. Instead, we focus on meaningful skills that support communication, self-advocacy, participation, independence, and connection.
We respect each child's strengths, preferences, sensory needs, and individual communication style while collaborating with families to develop useful, achievable goals.
Is speech therapy just practicing speech sounds?
Not at all! Speech-language pathologists support much more than pronunciation. We also help children understand and use language, communicate ideas, participate in conversations, develop language-related academic skills, and navigate increasingly complex communication demands.
For some children, therapy focuses on producing speech sounds clearly. For others, it may involve understanding a story, explaining an idea, organizing a writing assignment, or communicating effectively with friends.
My child is autistic. Do you provide services for autistic children?
Absolutely! We work with autistic children and adolescents with a wide range of communication styles and support needs. Our neurodiversity-affirming approach emphasizes meaningful communication, autonomy, regulation, self-advocacy, and positive relationships. We individualize therapy rather than assuming that every autistic child needs the same goals or strategies.
Do you work with children who use AAC or communicate without spoken language?
Yes. We support augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and recognize that communication can take many forms, including gestures, signs, pictures, speech-generating devices, and spoken language. Our goal is to help children access effective, meaningful ways to communicate their thoughts, preferences, needs, and ideas.
Can you help with reading, writing, and executive functioning?
Yes! Language skills are closely connected to learning. Our clinicians support the language foundations of literacy, reading comprehension, written expression, organization, working memory, planning, flexible thinking, and other executive-functioning skills.
We focus on the communication and language-based learning skills that help children become more confident and independent across school, home, and everyday activities.
Do you work with teens and young adults?
Yes! Communication and learning demands continue to evolve throughout adolescence and young adulthood.Older clients may benefit from support with complex language comprehension, verbal and written expression, executive functioning, self-advocacy, social communication, and other skills relevant to increasing independence.
We use age-respectful activities and collaborate with clients to identify personally meaningful goals.
Do you provide feeding therapy?
Yes. Feeding is one of the clinical areas supported by Stewart SLP.Our services may address feeding efficiency, oral-sensory challenges, food selectivity, and expanding comfortable participation in eating experiences.
Because feeding challenges can involve medical, nutritional, sensory, and motor factors, recommendations are individualized, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals may be appropriate.
What happens during a typical therapy session?
Sessions are designed around each client's goals, developmental level, interests, and learning style. For younger children, therapy may include games, toys, books, movement, and play-based activities. Older children and teens may work through conversations, real-life scenarios, reading and writing activities, collaborative problem-solving, or functional learning tasks.
Although therapy is often playful and engaging, activities are intentionally selected to support specific communication and learning objectives.
Can parents participate in therapy?
Absolutely! We value ongoing collaboration between families and clinicians.Parents and caregivers can learn about therapy goals, observe strategies, ask questions, and receive suggestions for supporting progress in everyday routines.
We believe that meaningful communication growth extends far beyond the therapy room.
How long will my child need therapy?
There is no single answer. Some children benefit from a relatively short period of targeted support, while others need longer-term intervention as their communication and learning needs change. The length and frequency of therapy depend on your child's goals, needs, response to intervention, and family priorities. We regularly review progress and adjust recommendations accordingly.
